How My Little Saga began.

Solveig and Tove looking over a Fjord

A Chance Encounter
It began with nothing more than a spontaneous afternoon. My grandchildren and I were undecided about where to go, so we chose the local country park, a familiar, easy, and unassuming place. But fate, as it often does in stories worth telling, had other plans.

To our surprise, the park had been transformed. A Viking re-enactment camp had sprung up as if from legend, complete with a king’s chair, a small Viking boat, and stalls filled with tunics, shields, and hand-forged blades. We wandered through the encampment, drawn in by the scent of woodsmoke and the clang of steel. The children were wide-eyed with wonder, especially when they were invited to dress up as Vikings themselves.

The Spark of a Story
What began as a quick visit became a full afternoon of adventure, laughter, storytelling, and the kind of magic you can never plan. That evening, while the excitement still lingered, my eldest granddaughter asked, “Grandad, can you write us a bedtime story about today, with all of us in it?”

That was when the spark caught.
The tale began as a short bedtime story, written just for them. But something about it kept growing. I rewrote it with their encouragement, changed their names and our family names, and wove them into the fabric of the narrative. What started as a playful memory soon became a living saga, layered with myth, emotion, and echoes of belonging.

A World Begins to Grow
Over time, the story evolved. It deepened. It stretched beyond that single afternoon and into something timeless. The characters took on new roles, the world expanded, and the emotional heart of the saga, rooted in family, legacy, and imagination, grew stronger with each retelling.

With each book, my grandchildren have remained part of the journey. Their involvement and occasional input have helped keep the adventure alive with the honesty, curiosity, and imagination that can only come from a child’s mind.

From Family Tale to Wider Saga
Now, that little spark has become a flame: a saga not only for my grandchildren, but for anyone who has ever felt the pull of story, the thrill of discovery, or the quiet power of being truly seen.

My aim has always been clear, to create stories that resonate with younger readers, especially those aged 9 to 18. But I also write with families in mind: parents, grandparents, and guardians who share these tales and see themselves reflected in themes of legacy, belonging, and the choices we make.

This saga is not just about Vikings. It is about the emotional journeys we all take. It is about courage, curiosity, and the quiet power of connection. And it all began with a simple afternoon in the park.
