How My Little Saga Began

It started with nothing more than a spontaneous afternoon. My grandchildren and I were undecided on where to go, so we chose the local country park a familiar place, easy and unassuming. But fate, as it often does in stories worth telling, had other plans.
To our surprise, the park had been transformed. A Viking re-enactment camp had sprung up like something out of legend complete with a king’s chair, a small Viking boat, and stalls overflowing with tunics, shields, and hand-forged blades. We wandered through the encampment, drawn in by the scent of woodsmoke and the clang of steel. The children were wide-eyed with wonder, especially when they were invited to dress up as Vikings themselves.
What began as a quick visit turned into a full afternoon of adventure laughter, storytelling, and the kind of magic you don’t plan for. That evening, as the excitement lingered, my eldest granddaughter asked, “Grandad, can you write us a bedtime story about today with all of us in it?”
And that’s when the spark caught.
The tale began as a short bedtime story, just for them. But something about it kept growing. I rewrote it, by changing their names and our family names, then woven into the fabric of the narrative. What started as a playful memory became a living saga layered with myth, emotion, and echoes of belonging.
Over time, the story evolved. It deepened. It stretched beyond the afternoon and into something timeless. The characters took on new roles, the world expanded, and the emotional heart of it rooted in family, legacy, and imagination grew stronger with each retelling.
Now, that little spark has become a flame. A saga not just for my grandchildren, but for anyone who’s ever felt the pull of story, the thrill of discovery, or the quiet power of being seen.
My Little Saga: The Journey Continues
The Journey Begins was never meant to be more than a bedtime story. But once the spark was lit, it grew into something far richer a tapestry of myth, memory, and imagination. As the story deepened, so did the characters, each one inspired by my grandchildren and woven with threads of our family’s spirit. Their personalities, quirks, and emotional truths became the heartbeat of the saga.
Researching the Viking era was both exhilarating and challenging. The period is shrouded in mystery fragmented records, oral traditions, and mythic echoes rather than concrete facts. But that ambiguity gave me room to breathe, to blend historical detail with creative freedom. I’ve tried to strike a balance: anchoring the story in authentic textures while allowing fiction to fill the gaps with wonder and emotional depth.
The second book in the series, Echoes of the Past, is set to release this October. It builds on the foundation of the first, expanding the world and deepening the emotional stakes. The third book is already with the proofreaders, and I’ve drafted manuscripts for the next two still in their early stages but brimming with potential.
My aim has always been clear, to create stories that resonate with younger readers, especially those aged 9 to 18. But I also write with families in mind, parents, grandparents, and guardians who share these tales, who see themselves reflected in the themes of legacy, belonging, and the choices we make.
This saga isn’t just about Vikings. It’s about the emotional journeys we all take. About courage, curiosity, and the quiet power of connection. And it all began with a simple afternoon in the park.
